WWII Tunnels Gibraltar: History & Significance
When World War II broke out in 1939, Gibraltar became one of Britain’s most strategically vital assets β a narrow gateway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. With the Rock potentially facing invasion, British military engineers began an extraordinary project: hollowing out the interior of the Rock to create a self-contained fortress city.
Working around the clock in conditions of absolute secrecy, over 30,000 men excavated more than 50 kilometres of tunnels. By the war’s peak, the tunnels could house the entire garrison β with a full hospital, bakeries, ammunition stores, and communications infrastructure. Today, walking these passages is one of the most atmospheric and moving historical experiences in Europe.
