A Journey Through 1,300 Years of History

Rising above the city of Gibraltar, the Moorish Castle is one of the oldest and most historically significant landmarks on the Rock. Originally constructed in the 8th century by the Moorish rulers of Iberia, the castle’s iconic Tower of Homage has witnessed over a thousand years of conquests, sieges and changing empires.

A visit here is a journey through the layered history that shaped Gibraltar into what it is today β€” from the first Moorish landing in 711 AD, through repeated sieges by Spanish and Portuguese forces, to the eventual British capture in 1704. Every stone of the castle carries the weight of that history.

With Rock & Monkey Tours, your expert local guide will bring these stories to life at the castle itself, combining expert historical commentary with spectacular views over the city and sea below.

Moorish Castle Gibraltar: History & Significance

The Moorish Castle dates back to 711 AD, when the Moorish general Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from North Africa and established Gibraltar β€” naming it Jabal Tariq, ‘the Mountain of Tariq’ β€” as a beachhead for the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula.

Over the following centuries, the castle was besieged, captured and rebuilt multiple times by competing powers including the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, and ultimately the British in 1704. The Tower of Homage dates from the 14th century and remains one of the finest examples of Moorish military architecture in the western Mediterranean.
